Chapter 3: Barbarian King’s Tomb Unearthed

After training at the base for only a week, the team is sent out on an emergency mission. Sergeant Scourge briefs the team. Scout teams report that Orcus is organizing his troops against Heironeous. Apparently Orcus requires the Scabbard of The Ages. The Scabbard has been lost for some time but was recently discovered in a cave system populated by a clan of barbarian goblins. The Scabbard is a key to finding a source of great power. The team must retrieve the Scabbard before it can be handed over to Orcus’ men. Philen is ordered to stay behind for a strategy planning session and Cog is placed in temporary lead of the team.

As the team heads for the gate room, Serri becomes greatly frustrated with Cog’s leadership and refuses a direct order to disclose his available spell list. Cog orders Serri to the brig and a defiant Serri is lead away by guards as the team departs.

The team arrives on a frigged planet in the black of night and immediately set off on the two-day march to the cave system. The team marches for several hours before setting camp to rest. The next morning, Serri is lead from his cell without explanation and is escorted into a very spacious office. Sitting at the desk in the center of the room is Heironeous. Heironeous explains the importance of this mission to Serri and asks him to rejoin his team. Serri agrees and is blessed with Heironeous’ protection. Serri immediately departs through the gate and hustles to rejoin the team at the cave system.

Back at the cave, the team enters the mouth of the cave and is immediately attacked by two goblins covered in strange markings. One of the goblins raises the alarm while the other screams a fit of rage and wades into the team. After defeating the two goblins the team searches the area and finds a pen containing goats and another tunnel moving deeper into the cave. The team elected to free the goats and narrowly avoids being trampled. A quick search of the goat pen turns up nothing but several small fissures leading into the rock. Most of the fissures are a tight squeeze even for Dale and Cog, but some would accommodate the larger team members. Cog decides to lead the team back into the main room and through the larger passageway instead of risking squeezing one at a time through the fissures.

Sticking to the major passageways, the team moves into a small room where a group of goblins have been camping. The goblins were alerted to the team’s presents and launch a ranged attack as the team moves in. More goblins join the fight from a passageway on the opposite site of the room. Fearing the team is being pinned down; Cog circles back through the goat pen hoping one of the fissures join up with this room. As Cog discovers all of the fissures in the goat pen are dead ends, the team mops up the remaining goblins and sets out to find their leader.

After rejoining the team, Cog leads onward deeper into the cave system. The trail leads to a very large and deep cannon in the middle of the cave system. With the team’s available light, they can’t quite see the bottom nor can they see the other side. With no visible means to cross the cannon, the team doubles back and tries a different path.

After crossing another smaller fissure over a very shaky bridge, the path leads back to the cannon. This time a long shaky bridge spans the cannon and disappears into the darkness. The team elects to stay on the current side of the cannon and searches out the remaining goblins.

In a room deep within the cage system, the team discovers a goblin cowering on a ledge above the door tending to a cauldron. The team slays the goblin before he has a chance to do anything and searches the room. The walls of the room are covered in the same strange markings as all of the goblins have been. The cauldron seems to contain the necessary ingredients for a potion of some sort, but none of the team members have any idea what the potion is or how to complete it.

Returning to the bridge, Serri joins up with the group and shares stories of meeting Heironeous. The bridge, while very unstable seems to support the men as they cross one at a time. On the otherside of the bridge, the team is attacked by tougher goblins than before. These goblins seem to be of the same tribe but of a higher caliber. During the fight, the ground begins to tremble and rocks tumble from the ceiling. After a minute, the shaking stops and the team continues deeper into the cave.

After fighting through several more rooms punctuated by intermitted shaking, the team finally comes to the great hall and stands face to face with the barbarian king and his men. The King holds the Scabbard of the Ages in one hand and a long sword in the other. Several barbarian goblins lay down arrows while others move into attack. As the team wades through the goblins, the ground begins to shake even harder.  The team becomes surrounded and eventually gets split into two groups. One group concentrations on the goblin warriors while the others face the King. The Barbarian King drops Bak’ku just before he is cut down. As the King hits the ground, the tremors reach their peak and the ceiling collapses. When the dust clears, the team hurt but surviving. Collecting the scabbard and Bak’ku’s corpse, the team heads back through the cave system towards the entrance.

The earthquake has collapsed several of the passageways and opened others. After several hours of exploring the cave system and doubling back, the team emerged from the cave and headed back to the gate.

Returning to the base, the team hands the scabbard over to Sergeant Scourge and discovers that more teams are being attacked while out on missions.
